WHERE PLAY MEETS PROTECTION looks into the intersection of age, gender and safety within the built environment. Examining the neoliberal development of London has mostly neglected the importance of play. The provision of space for children and young people has become limited, impacting their sense of belonging in the city. As increasing numbers of young people are experiencing mental health issues, this project recognises the influence the built environment has on wellbeing, safety and sense of belonging. The lack of youth-centred design limits the opportunities for young people, especially young girls, to feel safe and represented in the urban environment.

Identifying these spatial issues, the project explores methods of engagement to allow young people to have their voices heard, creating more sustainable, suitable spaces. Through exploring feminist methods and theories, understanding policy, and the spaces between school and home, the project challenges how we produce public spaces. Positioning engagement as a tool, advocating for diverse perspectives, the inclusion of young people can help inform design decisions, making the city more inclusive, sustainable and caring.
